An alternative medicine?

Wed, 09/04/2008 - 08:20
Until recently quite a lot of NHS primary care trusts were beginning to develop some local NHS complementary medicine facilities. I think there's been a bit of a reversal in this trend because some people have said there's not enough money to buy conventional treatment let alone complementary treatment which isn't proven. But the fact is, the people who need complementary therapies are going to cost the NHS money anyway - for drugs and outpatients appointments. In many ways having a local complementary therapies unit is very cost effective for the kinds of conditions that conventional medicine doesn't deal well with.

Heal with homeopathy

Tue, 18/03/2008 - 08:20
ometime ago, I wrote that my "conversion" from a "hard core" pharmacist to alternative medicine was due to a miraculous cure of a skin rash. The rash had failed to respond to the best of modern medicine for almost two years. Then, I was cured in one session by a homeopath. Because of this, homeopathy holds a special place in my heart. The more I studied it the more I became impressed with its history and worldwide penetration.

Time for different view to tackle rural crises

Sat, 15/03/2008 - 08:20
We are increasingly dismayed about yet another huge worry facing farmers in the form of bluetongue disease. We therefore read the articles and editorial on this subject in the current issue of Cumbria Farmer with great interest. Local farmers must feel desperate indeed to learn that there is a shortage of vaccines to help prevent this terrible disease in their animals. However, there is a safe and inexpensive second option which stands every chance of helping, and which is currently being ignored. This is homeopathic medicine, and every farmer should know about it.

Homeopathy treatment just a click away

Sat, 15/03/2008 - 08:20
Though Dr Shah was trained in homeopathy in Mumbai, he derived his inspiration from a Greek doctor, George Vithoulkas, who once travelled all over the world spreading the gospel of homeopathy. This convinced the young Shah in 1984 to start a clinic in a 120 sq ft room with ambitions to build a global practice over time. But with little money, no contacts and a base in an obscure corner of Mumbai, he didnt know how he was going to spread homeopathy around the world.

Taking Evidence Seriously

Fri, 14/03/2008 - 08:20
Heres one example: the British government is now introducing standards of competence in homeopathy, aromatherapy, reflexology and other alternative therapies, in order to protect the public from inadequately trained practitioners. That sounds nice, at first glance. But what, precisely, does it mean to be competent in a system of pseudo-medicine that has never been demonstrated to be efficacious beyond the placebo effect? Perhaps for its next act, the NHS will introduce bloodletting and trepanation, duly guaranteed by rigorous standards of competence for practitioners.

"It's extremely dilute," said the Rev. Lesley Hall, a longtime homeopathic advocate who leads the Cookeville Homeopathic Study Group. "Say you wanted to make an herbal tincture of hypericum. You take one drop of that into 99 drops of water, then shake, or 'succuss,' it very hard, and place one drop of that into 99 more drops of water, succuss it very hard, then one drop of that into 99 more drops of water. And you do that 30 times for 30C, a standard homeopathic dosage."

Simon Hoggart

Sun, 09/03/2008 - 09:20
Another quasi-religion - a belief system that requires faith without evidence - is homeopathy. Simon Singh and Edzard Ernst are two academics who have a book out next month called Trick Or Treatment Bantam. It's a dispassionate look at alternative medicines from aromatherapy to qijong and shiatsu. Not surprisingly, they conclude that the only real value of homeopathy is as a placebo, and that the people who proclaim its virtues would mostly have got better anyway.
